Windows

We constantly refine our designs, adding subtle changes to improve the beauty, functionality and durability of our products. Many of these changes are based on lessons we learn from dismantling old windows and doors that we encounter in our travels. By incorporating some of the features that allowed these beautiful old windows to endure for 100 years or more, we’ve been able to infuse our modern designs with old-fashioned common sense.

We make all types of windows: single-hung, double-hung, picture, bow, awning, hopper, round, half-round, casement, and French. You can choose from a wide variety of bronze, brass, or stainless steel hardware available from several American and European suppliers. Other desired hardware styles and finishes are also available upon request. We make screens to fit any door or window. We typically use either bronze or fiberglass mesh.

Window Features

When you purchase one of our windows, you also get several exclusive features:

– All J.S. Benson double-hung windows use our proprietary window slide system. This allows owners to easily adjust the frames’ slide tension as they undergo the natural minor dimensional changes that occur in all wood windows as heat and humidity varies with the seasons.

– One of our hallmarks is the 7/8 true divided light (TDL) muntin. Also known as a Faux Putty Muntin, its outside profile is designed to give the appearance of a traditional putty-gazed muntin. Our exclusive design yields the narrowest dimensions any manufacturer has been able to achieve while using high-performance insulated glass panes that exceed energy code requirements. The TDL’s thin, authentic appearance has made it the choice of history-conscious home owners, architects as well as civic and state Landmark Commissions throughout the country.

– We use a combination of warm edge spacers and premium hot melt butyl sealant to create a triple air and vapor barrier locking in the Argon or Krypton gas. This coupled with appropriately engineered Low-E coatings allow us to offer R-Values as high as R-5 without resorting to heavy expensive triple glazing. We set the completed I.G. unit in the sash with a silicone-based wet glazing to form an uninterrupted gasket around each pane that protects the unit against moisture penetration. Wet glazing insures a long-lived seal between the wood frame and the insulated glass. Our warm edge spacer is made from non-cold-conducting silicon rubber to separate the inner and outer panes to maximize its thermal resistance. This allows us to build windows with state-of-the-art efficiency while maintaining the visual aesthetics necessary for historic renovations and other demanding architectural applications. As a result, we are able to design high-efficiency windows that are approved for use in the National Forest Service’s historic structures and is approved by Landmark Commissions in Boston, New York, Albany and many other regions throughout the United States.

– Our double-hung windows come with installer-friendly features. The removable lifting handles, weight box access hatches, and clear, concise installation instructions have been designed to reduce labor costs and to insure that your windows will be installed correctly for maximum service life and thermal performance.
